Student achievement tied to socioeconomic status in study

May 10, 2010 - The report, released by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce as the second of a series, found that "measures of student achievement tend to be highly correlated with factors outside the control of the 'education system' itself." The report identified "no significant relationship" between the funding level and pupil performance in fourth or eighth grades.

Clark County School District Board of Trustees President Terri Janison said some of the findings couldn't be accurately applied to the Silver State.

"The problem with (studying) Nevada is that we have never been funded at a level to test it," she said. "We have never been adequately funded."

Poverty rates had "a high correlation" to how well fourth and eighth grade students performed on mathematics exams, the study found. Meanwhile, student counts and the size of minority populations were found to affect high school graduation rates.
